This is the perfect ring set for that couple deep in love. These rings will not be found ANYWHERE else within the online resale world. They were purchased in the early '80 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This ring set is through and through SOLID silver. These days, you will find that sterling rings you order are feather light in composition. In other words, you pay arm and limb for a nice silver ring, only to find when it arrives that it is flimsy, delicate, fragile, and feels as though you are holding nothing in the palm of your hand. These rings were made back when designers did not shy away from heavy bodied, solid silver jewelry. They were not looking to "cut cost," find a way to create a design using as little silver as possible, but rather looking to produce something substantial... something that would last year after year, decade after decade. Weighing in at 12 GRAMS each - 24 GRAMS total for the pair, these are not your typical modern day sterling rings.. they are old school in their builds, and old school in their meticulous, and HIGHLY detailed handmade designs.
These rings were made by an artist operating out of the Santa Fe area in the early '80s. The artist was a sculptor turned silversmith, who often used the "lost wax" method that he used with his brass sculptures of size, to create the same finitely detailed designs on handcrafted rings.
I have seen HUNDREDS of sterling silver elephant rings on the market, even here on eBay. However, I would challenge you to find a ring that competes with the level of detail shown within the elephants depicted on these rings. Run a basic search for "elephant ring." What you will find, are not really "elephants," but more "caricatures" or "cartoon-like" depictions of these magnificent creatures. These rings depict the the heads of two elephants, each distinct, yet almost fused with one another. The sides of their faces are pressed together, their trunks becoming one in their seamless connection. These elephants (elephants are arguably one of the most intelligent animals in the world) are embracing each other in a display of affection one would be hard pressed to label anything less than "love." The pair, are in love - beautifully depicted hear in the wrapping together of the trunks, pressed together faces, and ever so slight (and natural) "smiles."
I would like to call your attention to the detail seen within the elephants. Their form (despite their size) is incredibly well put together. Take the trunks - you can SEE the folds of skin, ridges from top to bottom. The tops of their heads are bold, almost flat before rounding to the neck (much like that of the real creatures). Their eyes are "happy," their mouths just barely upturned in a way that makes these creatures seem as though they are smiling. Even the creases in the large, flapping ears are visible. Again, these are not "cartoon" resemblances of the real thing, but rather the result of a talented sculptor bringing the real thing to life in a medium of heavy sterling silver.
Both of these rings are stamped "sterling" on the inside band, as well as "Sb" - which is the artist's unique signature (Uppercase "S", Lowercase "B" The "S" and the "b" are fused together.
These rings each weigh 12 grams (a total of 24 grams if they are put on the scale together). This weight comes in the form of solid sterling silver.
They are both sized 8.5
